Grid Fighters 2012 Season Finale
Sunday September 23rd,, 2012 - The Grid Fighters and GFL 2012 Season Finale has wrapped up another great action-packed season. 2012 saw the introduction of the Grid Fighters format hosted by the X Sports, and without a doubt, it was a success with both players and spectators alike.
The X Sports festivals were a culmination of the town of Gananoque and Ground Zero’s efforts to put the town and extreme sports on the Canadian map. The venue hosted a variety of new exciting competitive sports, which included a state of the art BMX race track, a fully equipped Skate park, a Grid Fighters venue and GFL paintball field, as well as an indoor arena for flat land cycling demos and competition.
The last event of the season combined the GFL Entry tournament, Grid Fighters Semi-Pro and Pro final matches. The Entry division, unlike in the previous year, gave cash prizes at each event. By the end of the season, several players from the Entry divisions were eager to jump onto a semi-pro team as ringers to try the format. I’d personally like to congratulate Force 10, a team very new to the speedball tournament scene, which made its debut at the GFL, taking the podium at each event.
On the Pro side of Grid Fighters, Montreal FX fed their hunger for victory and kept their opponents on their toes all season. In the final event, they took the win against Toronto Hustle, guaranteeing them the first place podium and the ‘Smith Cup’. In second place was Toronto Hustle, and Gatineau Altitude took third. The Kingston Red Dragons have had an undefeated season and won their well-deserved first place in the Semi-Pro division.
The season has come to an end, but keep an ear to the ground as the league takes 2013 by storm, and be sure to follow for your chance to get into or obtain a franchise. Details will be released as the next season gets into gear. Spots will be limited.
Special mention of generous sponsorship for this inaugural season: The Town of Gananoque, 1000 Islands Accommodation Partners, Gananoque Boat Line, Moto Sport Plus, Planet Eclipse, Badlands Paintball, Home Hardware, Canadian Tire, Altitude Gym, Ground Zero Paintball, BMX Canada, Sports Xpress magazine, MY FM Gananoque radio station, and many volunteers giving their time and effort to ensure the success of the venue for years to come.
Badlands, Planet Eclipse, and INKA have been the main sponsors and supporters of the Grid Fighters Leagues from its inception. They have continuously provided great support, services and products to make each event memorable for all players, from providing great paint, to fixing and cleaning markers.
Big thanks to parents and athletes who contributed in the tremendous success of this season. Until the next one... Cheers!!
